Pizzo Cavagnöö is a little-known mountain located between Val Bedretto and Val Bavona.
To reach it, start out from Paltano, a village on the road leading to the Nufenen Pass. We then walk along the path that climbs up to San Giacomo where we stop for a moment to look at the beautiful chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra (or of Bari). A little further on, there is also a fort from the Second World War, of which several embrasures can be seen. We then continue eastwards until we reach a large, ancient landslide called Ganone, where there is a large quantity of boulders now partly covered in grass. Surprisingly, there is a fairly easy path through all that chaos and up the other side to the fork at an altitude of about 2442 metres. At this point, the path splits into two; the one on the left leads to Passo Grandinagia while the one on the right leads to Bocchetta di Formazzora. We follow the one on the right and begin to climb through a scree slope where the path becomes a little more challenging and less visible than the previous one, especially in the first section up to an altitude of 2530 metres. After this somewhat steep ascent, we finally reach the Bocchetta di Formazzora, thus overcoming the most difficult part of the excursion. From here, in a short time, we reach the summit through easy slopes sprinkled with small rocks.
From the top you can enjoy a beautiful panorama and a wonderful view of the Basòdino glacier, which is almost in front of you.
After a well-deserved break, we descend to the Bocchetta di Formazzora and from there to San Giacomo. At this point we decide to make a detour to the San Giacomo pass, which we reach after a short, not very demanding climb. We finally retrace our steps and descend to Paltano along the same path we took in the morning.
As far as water is concerned, there are two springs before arriving at San Giacomo, which flow along the path at an altitude of about 2185 metres. Then there is nothing reliable.
