Since we are now at the end of the season and the days are getting shorter, today I choose to take a relatively short trip and climb Mount Gambarogno from Alpe di Neggia. However, I choose to do a loop tour and first pass by the Oratory of Sant'Anna and then reach the summit from the Gambarogno side.
The path leading to the oratory from the beginning climbs slightly through a magnificent forest where there are many species of trees including beech, birch, larch and pine. After about 1.5 km it begins a downhill section that makes you lose about 200 meters of elevation gain until you reach the path coming from Indemini. Following it for about 1 km I reach the oratory dedicated to Sant'Anna behind which there is also a small refuge with 12 beds. I then continue to Alpe Cedullo after which I begin to climb toward Monte Gambarogno along a path that has just been redone and now has a more regular slope than before. Near the summit I find some old military barracks of which one, the one at the top, is being renovated to become a hut. In fact, there is a lot of scaffolding near it, and a wooden platform has been laid right at the summit. Once I reach the latter, I continue a little further along the south ridge so that I can take some photos of the landscape. On the eastern side of the mountain one can still see the trees burned during the January 30 fire that had kept firefighters busy for a good 12 days because of the wind.
After my lunch break I begin to descend to the cross, also visible from the valley floor, present at an altitude of 1681 meters. I then take the trail that heads north to the junction listed at 1554 meters after which I turn in the direction of Alpe di Neggia where I end this trip.
Regarding water, there is a fountain at the beginning, near the parking lot, and then one more at the Oratory of Sant'Anna.
